Gemini 4 Argon comes to Android Studio and the command line

Why it matters Coding agents can now fix their own Gradle and compiler errors in Android Studio, if you pay for Gemini.

Google's Android Developers Blog says Gemini 4 Argon, its newest frontier model, is now available for Android work. It runs in Android Studio, in the Antigravity desktop app and command line, and through an Android CLI plugin for other terminal agents. It reads Gradle and Kotlin compiler errors and fixes them in a loop. Access needs Google AI Ultra or the paid Gemini API tier.

Google Play adds a deep link tester and AI app comparisons

Why it matters You can test deep links in Play Console without a phone, and quality programs can lower your Play fees.

Google Play announced a batch of changes. Play Console gets a built-in deep link emulator, and the Engage SDK, which shows your content outside your app, now covers nine categories including education and fitness. Users get side-by-side app comparisons in search. Two programs that cut service fees for quality apps can now be joined directly in Play Console.

Android 17 text bug found by taking the system library apart

Why it matters Native code on recent Android 17 builds can mishandle text beyond basic Latin, and the fix is not out yet.

A developer found that two wide-character string functions in Android 17's C library, used by native code, wrongly match any character beyond the basic Latin range. Google has not published source for the latest Pixel builds, so they disassembled the library to find the cause. A Google engineer confirmed the bug and plans a fix and backport. The thread drew almost 500 points on Hacker News.

Kotlin Multiplatform plugin drops Swift editing support

Why it matters Kotlin Multiplatform teams will edit the iOS side outside Android Studio again from the next IDE releases.

JetBrains is ending Swift language features in its Kotlin Multiplatform plugin, starting with IntelliJ IDEA 2026.3 and Android Studio Rabbit 2. That covers editing, syntax highlighting and navigation in Swift files and between Swift and Kotlin code. Kotlin Multiplatform lets teams share Kotlin code across Android and iOS, so teams that edited Swift in the IDE will need Xcode or another editor.

Jetpack starts a new multiplatform library for keep annotations

Why it matters Rules that stop the code shrinker from removing your classes may soon live in annotations instead of separate files.

Jetpack published the first alpha of a new artifact group called Annotation Keep, with builds for Android, the JVM, iOS, Linux, Windows and watchOS, plus a Gradle plugin. CommonsWare listed it as this week's new artifact group. The name suggests annotations that tell R8, Android's code shrinker, which code to keep. No release notes are out yet, so treat it as one to watch.

CoScreen's founders rebuild their pairing tool as free open source

Why it matters Remote teams that lost CoScreen get a free pairing tool they can also host themselves.

Datadog shut down CoScreen, a screen sharing tool for pair programming, at the end of July. Four of its original team have built Petal, a free and open-source replacement. Shared windows show up as real windows on your desktop with everyone's cursor, and anyone can type or click in them. It runs on Mac and Windows, with Linux next, and can be self-hosted.

Liquid AI released LFM 2.5, a mixture of experts model with 24 billion parameters that uses only 2 billion for each word it writes. Liquid reports about 184 tokens per second on an Apple M5 Max laptop chip. It was trained inside agent tools like OpenCode, supports tool calls, and runs with llama.cpp and MLX. It trended on Hugging Face and Hacker News.

Why it matters When AI helps design systems, crediting the earlier work they build on matters more, not less.

Anthropic described Scion, its new version control system, which precomputes data to make operations like blame fast. An engineer who helped build Mononoke, Meta's open-source source control server, says the design closely mirrors Mononoke without naming it. VoiceStudio offers a free, local alternative to ElevenLabs

Why it matters Voice cloning and dubbing, until now mostly paid cloud services, can run free on your own machine.

VoiceStudio is an open-source app for voice cloning, voice design, video dubbing, dictation, transcription and audiobook creation, all on your own computer. It pitches itself as a fully local alternative to ElevenLabs, the paid voice service. Small decision models · Agent memory layers · On-device AI · Verifying agent work · Agent harnesses · Agent-ready Android

Ideas showing up in more than one place today. The line counts items per day over two weeks.

Small decision models

steady7 items7 sources

Models built only to make quick, typed decisions keep spreading. TypeSafe shipped Jev 1.14 to the Hacker News front page, Nimble launched a decision model on Product Hunt, a decision-model leaderboard trends on Hugging Face, Philipp Lackner covered a model for type-safe decisions, and a new paper studies why such single-pass models pick the wrong action.

Why now. Agent pipelines make many small routing and approval calls per task, so cost, speed and typed output per decision now matter more than raw intelligence.

We’re releasing Jev 1.14.0 along with experimental features for dreamersHN front page

Agent memory layers

new8 items5 sources

Several launches sell memory for agents: Hindsight and Memlake for learning from experience, Make0 Brain as one store across all agents, FamRelay for sharing approved facts between assistants, and Graphicle for coding agents. A Dev.to post and a new survey paper argue that memory alone is not learning.

Why now. People now use several agents for long, repeated work, and each one forgetting the last session has become the visible failure.

Hindsight 1.0 + MemlakeProduct Hunt

On-device AI

steady10 items7 sources

Liquid AI's 24 billion parameter model for laptop agents trends on Hugging Face and Hacker News, alongside its 3 billion parameter sibling and a 1 billion parameter vision model. Pulse Local answers budget questions with models on your Mac, VoiceStudio runs voice cloning locally, and an agent was squeezed onto a 48MB Nokia phone.

Why now. Sparse expert models activate only a small part of their weights per token, which makes large models fast enough on laptop chips.

LiquidAI/LFM2.5-24B-A2BHF trending models

Verifying agent work

new8 items5 sources

Tools and essays converge on checking what agents did: iFixAi audits agents, Tiden verifies a coding agent's intent, Epherem scans AI-built apps for flaws, and posts argue that a plan is not permission and that end-to-end evals beat spot checks. HN's top AI story blames weak monitoring for AI hacking reports.

Why now. Agents now act with real permissions on code and systems, so proving they did the right thing has become a buying criterion.

ifixai-ai/iFixAiGitHub Trending

Agent harnesses

new6 items4 sources

The loop around the model is becoming its own product. A YC company proposes an open protocol for running whole harnesses as a backend, Voyager is a harness for creative models, a benchmark tests how well models build harnesses, and RL training now runs across several harnesses at once.

Why now. Coding agents showed that tools, memory and loop design drive results as much as the model does.

UHP: Unified Harness Protocol by HarnessRouterYC Launches

Agent-ready Android

steady6 items3 sources

Google keeps wiring Android development for agents: Gemini 4 Argon in Android Studio and an Android CLI plugin for terminal agents, the Developer Knowledge API, ADK for Kotlin, the Googlebook terminal, and AppFunctions still in alpha.

Why now. Agents now run whole Android tasks, so Google wants them using its model, its docs and its tools.

What
Petal, a free and open-source pair programming app with low-latency screen sharing and remote control, built by four of the original CoScreen team.
For whom
Remote engineering teams that pair program.
Problem
Datadog shut CoScreen down on 31 July, leaving its users without a shared-window pairing tool.
Why now
The shutdown left an orphaned user base, and LiveKit makes real-time media infrastructure available off the shelf.
Wedge
Shared windows appear as real, movable windows with everyone's cursor, and persistent named rooms replace meeting links.
Money
Free, with a hosted Petal Cloud or self-hosting on your own LiveKit server; no paid tier described.

What
LFM2.5-24B-A2B, an open-weight mixture-of-experts model from Liquid AI with 24 billion parameters and 2 billion active per token, built for agents on laptops.
For whom
Developers running agents locally on laptops and consumer hardware.
Problem
Capable agent models usually need cloud APIs that cost per call and send data off the device.
Why now
Sparse models run fast on laptop chips; Liquid reports 184 tokens per second on an Apple M5 Max.
Wedge
Post-trained with reinforcement learning inside real agent harnesses such as OpenClaw, Hermes Agent and OpenCode, with tool-calling scores published.

Bringing our latest frontier model to Android Developers

What
Google brings Gemini 4 Argon, its newest frontier model, to Android work: in Android Studio, in the Antigravity desktop app and command line, and through an Android CLI plugin for other terminal agents.
For whom
Android developers on Google AI Ultra or the paid Gemini API tier who want agents to carry out whole tasks.
Problem
Agents that write Android code stall on Gradle and Kotlin compiler errors and need a person to paste the errors back.
Why now
The post says development is moving from code completion to agents executing end to end under the developer's direction.
Wedge
Self-healing build loops: Antigravity captures Gradle and compiler errors and the model works through root causes on its own.
Money
Paid access through Google AI Ultra or the paid Gemini API tier, with introductory pricing until 30 November 2026.
Like
Claude Code · Cursor · GitHub Copilot · Gemini in Android Studio

The post gives no benchmark scores; claims such as smooth 120 FPS shader animations are examples, not measurements.

What
Jev 1.14.0 from TypeSafe AI, a 'System One' model that makes fast decisions inside software, offered through an early-access API.
For whom
Teams automating routing, classification or UI steps that need typed, consistent answers.
Problem
Using a large chat model for every small decision is slow, costly and returns loosely typed output.
